Zinc Acetate is a chemical compound and ionic salt with the chemical formula Zn(CH₃CO₂)₂. While it can exist in an anhydrous form, it most commonly occurs as a dihydrate, represented by the formula Zn(CH₃CO₂)₂·2H₂O.

Physical and Chemical Properties
  • Appearance: Both the anhydrous and dihydrate forms appear as white or colorless crystalline solids.
  • Solubility: It is highly soluble in water (dissociating into zinc and acetate ions) and is also soluble in methanol.
  • Melting and Boiling Point: Zinc acetate does not have a specific boiling point; instead, it decomposes when heated to 237 °C (459 °F) to form zinc oxide and organic vapors.
  • Preparation: It is typically synthesized by reacting acetic acid with zinc metal, zinc oxide, or zinc carbonate.
Common Uses
Zinc acetate has wide-ranging applications across medical, industrial, and chemical fields:

1. Medical and Dietary Supplements

  • Zinc Deficiency: It is commonly used as a dietary supplement to manage and prevent zinc deficiencies.
  • Cold Remedies: It is frequently formulated into lozenges to help treat and shorten the duration of the common cold.
  • Wilson's Disease: It is taken as an oral daily supplement by patients with Wilson's disease to inhibit the body's absorption of copper.
  • Topical Treatments: Thanks to its astringent and antimicrobial properties, it is used in OTC anti-itch ointments, topical lotions, and combined with antibiotics (like erythromycin) to treat acne.
2. Industrial and Chemical Applications

  • Catalyst: It is heavily used as a catalyst in the industrial production of vinyl acetate from acetylene, a precursor used for manufacturing polymers.
  • Manufacturing & Textiles: It is utilized as a dye mordant, a wood protectant, and in textile processing to cease bacterial growth on fabrics.
  • Nuclear Power: It functions as a plating inhibitor on primary water piping in commercial nuclear power plants.
  • Chemical Precursor: The basic form of zinc acetate is a common precursor for synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
Health Hazards and Safety
While safe when used appropriately in medical or dietary contexts, overexposure or improper handling can pose health risks. Inhaling zinc acetate dust can cause mild to severe irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs, triggering coughing or wheezing. Swallowing industrial quantities can cause corrosion or irritation of the alimentary tract, leading to nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort.
